Doraemon!

After my great Snoopy fiasco of this year, I vowed not to enter or compete in any more contests where the prize is something that must be worn.  Instead, I’ve turned my attention (aside from equine pursuits of glory) toward the 7-11 Doraemon and Friends plush collection!

Well, not really.  I actually just go by the 7-11 almost everyday and they just kept giving me these stickers.  I had heard of Doraemon in my beginning Japanese class [oh yeah, I've been sitting in on a 'survival' Japanese course, which is doing amazing things with my Cantonese learning] but I really had no idea what it was all about.  So, today, I started watching episodes on Doraemon.  At about 9 minutes each, they are quite cute little adventures that always end in a non-cudgeling moral.  I did some more research and I learned that the little earless-fox-robot-thing is quite a popular Japanese manga/anime character (he even has official government ambassador status).

So, armed with the knowledge of Doraemon, I decided to see how many stickers I had.  I placed them in their little booklets and walked on down to the 7-11 to claim my prizes!  When you turn them in, you get 1 little box for each little booklet.  As I held my two little boxes, I realized there were 7 plushes, and I only knew who Doraemon and the little boy (Nobita).  Suddenly, sadness overtook my joy.  “Well, I hope one of them is Doraemon,” I quietly said as I returned to my room.

Opening it the box, the bright blue plush simply made my day.  Victory was mine…

Snoopy and Wellcome win…

I love Snoopy, you love Snoopy, and Wellcome loves Snoopy!  Perhaps, even all of Hong Kong loves Snoopy, since there is a ‘Snoopy World‘ in Sha Tin (which I have not yet visited).  Regardless, when I arrived in Hong Kong and visited the grocery enterprise of Wellcome (yes, two LL’s – perhaps wishing you to be extra ‘well’ while shopping or implying that if you are not ‘well’ do not come to Wellcome?), I received these adorable Snoopy stamps.  I quickly learned that if I collected a mere 30 of these stamps I would be rewarded with a Snoopy fun series watch.  Spending $50 HK gets you one stamp (though you could get double stamps on weekend spending).  Of course this is a deal, I mean, who wouldn’t spend $750 to $1500 HK (roughly $96 to $200 USD) on an adorable Snoopy watch?  Despite the scheme, I was determined to win a free watch.  Through cajoling and finagling, I managed to collect stamps from other ETAs and bam:

30 Snoopy stamps collected on my handy dandy, and freely provided, sheet!  With glee, I bounded like a child to Wellcome – eager for my prize and congratulating myself on my skills.  Oh the joy of the beige Snoopy watch:

I felt like a child – happy to win a prize and ready to sport my new Snoopy gear. Visions of me walking around campus, looking down at Snoopy and him happily informing me of the hour, filled me with joy. Yet, alas, Wellcome was indeed to have the last laugh.  Just look:
