Guilin & Yangshuo

Otherworldly and beautiful, the area of Guilin and Yangshuo almost escapes words and description.  It definitely ranks among the most beautiful places I have been in the world.  People ask me what I did when I went to Guilin and Yangshuo and the answer is: I looked.  A strange confusion grows on their face and they say again, but what did you do?  It is hard to describe.  I wasn’t base jumping, I didn’t rock climb [though it is popular there], I was there just to enjoy and look.  Like a beautiful water color painting, or an epic Chinese scroll,  the Guilin area simply offers scenery that is unmatched and almost unimaginable.  It is easy to see how these green mountains, which jut suddenly and strangely from open fields, inspired countless painters and writers.

These pictures are en route between Guilin and Yangshuo.  Often, however, I found myself just looking and not taking photographs on this journey.  That said, there are a few more available here.

A small note, the last picture [the one with the water grass] made me think to myself that it is no wonder people thought dragons or giant serpents lived in the waters.  The long grass waves and flows through, creating a mirage of motion of a passing beast.  Truly mythical natural scenery.

MacLehose Stage 1 and Stage 2

The MacLehose trail spans the New Territories of Hong Kong.  In total, it covers about 100 KM.  Originally, I planned to do Stages 1 through 5 or 6 with several other ETAs.  Unfortunately, a sudden cold front, traveling with some gray clouds, put a major damper on those plans.  While freezing at night can be fun, it isn’t when there are major winds piercing through your bones and you weren’t even prepared for the cold [since the week before had been a sunny and warm extravaganza].  So, only Stages 1 and 2 were completed.  Stage 1 is basically a road.  Stage 2 has beautiful beaches, some down up rollercoaster hills which can be a little rough on the knees, and finishes with an acent toward heaven.  Both of these sections go around the Sai Kung pennisula – so great beaches and ocean vantages.   Plus, it was great fun with friends.

I plan on returning to finish the other sections during this spring, so keep a look out [Stages 3 and 4 are suppose to be killer difficult, Stage 5 apparently has some tunnels and monkeys].  Exciting!

It is hard to believe so much greenery is in Hong Kong.  This is definitely not what first comes to mind when you think ‘Hong Kong,’ but that’s what makes this city so amazing – vibrant city life butted up against a vibrant natural world.  I wonder where the butterfly equivalent of LKF is…
